How to make seed paper with wildflower seeds?

Hey there! I’m stoked to share with you how to make seed paper with wildflower seeds. As a seed paper supplier, I’ve seen firsthand the magic that happens when you combine paper and seeds. It’s not only a fun and creative project but also an eco – friendly way to add a touch of nature to your life. Seed Paper

What You’ll Need

First things first, let’s talk about the materials. You don’t need a bunch of fancy stuff to make seed paper. Here’s what I usually gather:

  • Recycled paper: You can use old newspapers, magazines, or office paper. The idea is to give these papers a new life. I often raid my recycling bin for this.
  • Wildflower seeds: There are tons of different wildflower seeds out there. You can pick the ones that are native to your area or ones that you just think look cool. I always recommend a mix so you get a variety of colors and types of flowers.
  • A blender: This is going to be your main tool for turning the paper into pulp. Any regular kitchen blender will do the job.
  • A mold and deckle: You can buy these at a craft store, or if you’re feeling DIY, you can make them at home. A mold is like a frame, and the deckle fits on top to help shape the paper.
  • Water: You’ll need plenty of it to soak and blend the paper.
  • Optional: Natural dyes If you want to add some color to your seed paper, you can use things like beetroot juice, turmeric, or spinach to create natural dyes.

Step 1: Prepare the Paper

Start by tearing the recycled paper into small pieces. The smaller, the better. You want to make it easier for the blender to turn it into pulp. I usually go for pieces that are about an inch or two square.

Once you’ve got your paper torn up, put it in a large container and cover it with water. Let it soak for a few hours or even overnight. This will make the paper soft and easy to blend.

Step 2: Blend the Paper

After the paper has soaked, it’s time to blend it. Pour the soaked paper and the water into the blender. You might need to do this in batches, depending on the size of your blender.

Blend the paper on high speed until it turns into a smooth pulp. It should look like a thick, soupy mixture. If it’s too thick, add a bit more water. If it’s too thin, you can let some of the water drain off.

Step 3: Add the Wildflower Seeds

Once you’ve got your pulp ready, it’s time to add the wildflower seeds. I like to add about a tablespoon of seeds for every cup of pulp, but you can adjust this depending on how many seeds you want in your paper.

Gently stir the seeds into the pulp. Make sure they’re evenly distributed throughout the mixture. You don’t want all the seeds to end up in one spot.

Step 4: Optional: Add Color

If you decided to use natural dyes, now’s the time to add them. Just pour a small amount of the dye into the pulp and stir it in. You can experiment with different colors and see what you like best.

Step 5: Make the Paper

Now comes the fun part – making the paper! Place the mold and deckle in a large container filled with water. Pour the pulp mixture into the water over the mold. Use your hands to spread the pulp evenly over the mold.

Once the pulp is evenly spread, lift the mold out of the water and let the excess water drain off. You can gently press the pulp with a piece of cloth to remove even more water.

Step 6: Dry the Paper

After you’ve removed as much water as possible, place the mold with the wet paper on a flat surface. Cover it with a piece of dry cloth and let it dry. You can speed up the drying process by placing it in a warm, dry place or using a fan.

It might take a day or two for the paper to completely dry, depending on the humidity and temperature. Once it’s dry, carefully peel the paper off the mold.

Step 7: Use Your Seed Paper

Your seed paper is now ready to use! You can cut it into different shapes and sizes. You can use it to make greeting cards, bookmarks, or even gift wrap.

When you’re ready to plant the paper, just bury it in the soil. Make sure to keep the soil moist, and in a few weeks, you’ll start to see the wildflowers sprouting.
